Boşu Boşuna, adını Aşık Mahzuni Şerif’in aynı adlı eserinden alan bir performans. Seyirciler, performans süresince aşık geleneğinde kolektif bir şiir antolojisi yaratıyor. 

Seyirci, performans sırasında 4 gruba ayrılıyor. Her grup, tarihin farklı bir anında yaşayan bir hikaye anlatıcısını dinleyerek performansı deneyimliyor. Tüm hikayeler yakın zamanda yaşanan bir iklim krizi alametinde kesişiyor: 2021 yazında Marmara Denizinde ortaya çıkan müsilaj. 

İstanbul’dan dört karakteri/hikayeyi -uzun zaman önce yok olmuş bir deniz, orta çağda yaşayan bir okyanusbilimci, geçen yüzyıldan bir şair ve günümüzden genç bir yazar- buluşturan Boşu Boşuna zamanın akışını ve kriz zamanında anlam üretmenin imkanlarını araştıran bir alan yaratıyor. 

Performans mekanı dört bölüme ayrılıyor ve her alanda farklı bir ses kaydı duyuluyor. Seyirci, her biri hikayedeki farklı bir karaktere ayrılmış bu alanlardan birini seçerek performans boyunca oradaki ses kaydını/hikayeyi dinliyor. Kayıtlı anlatı, zaman zaman canlı bir anlatıcının anlattığı müsilaj ve Marmara Denizindeki canlı hayatın yok oluş hikayesi ile bölünüyor. Canlı anlatıcı, aynı zamanda seyirciye takip etmesi için yönergeler de veriyor. Performansın sonunda bu yönergelerden aşık geleneğinde kolektif bir şiir antolojisi oluşuyor.

In Vain is a performance piece which takes its name from the ashik (poet) Mahzuni Şerif’s song, Boşu Boşuna (In Vain). During the performance, the audience creates a collective anthology of poems in the tradition of an asik. 

The audience experiences the piece in 4 different groups, each listening to the narration of a storyteller from a different moment in history. All of the stories intersect with one of the recent symptoms of the arriving climate crisis - the marine mucilage which covered the Marmara Sea in 2021.

By bringing together four characters/stories from Istanbul: A long-disappeared sea, an oceanographer from the middle ages, a poet from the last century and a young writer from contemporary times, In Vain creates a space to investigate the passing of time, and how to make meaning in the face of crisis. 

The space of the performance is arranged with four distinct areas, each with a video playing a different video track. Audience members will be asked to choose the path of one of these characters. The recorded narration is interrupted by a live narrator who tells the story of the marine mucilage, and the death of marine life in the Marmara Sea, and gives the audience members prompts to respond to. At the end of the performance these prompts are assembled to form a collective anthology of poetry in the ashik tradition.
